Understanding the Art of Candido Portinari: A Journey into the Heart of Brazilian Culture

Candido Portinari, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, has left an indelible mark on Brazilian culture. His work, characterized by its vivid portrayal of the Brazilian people’s reality, continues to resonate today. Through a scientific initiation program at the Estacio de Sa University in Rio de Janeiro, we embarked on a narrative exercise that engaged with some of Portinari’s most iconic pieces. We believe that expanding this experience, including in undergraduate settings, can foster a deeper understanding between healthcare professionals and those they serve, often from diverse backgrounds beautifully captured by Portinari.
