The Korean Association of Orthodontists: A Pioneering Journey

The Korean Association of Orthodontists (KAO) has a rich history that dates back to May 28, 1959, when it was established by 10 founding members at the prestigious Severance Hospital. During the inaugural meeting, Dr. Gwi-Sun Kim was elected as the President, and Dr. Han-Soo Lee took on the role of Secretary General.

KAO holds the distinction of being the first branch academy of dentistry in Korea, a testament to the growing demand and need for specialized orthodontic care in the country. This pioneering effort paved the way for the establishment of seven other branch academies of dentistry in the years to come.

A Milestone in Korean Dental History

On October 30-31, 1959, the semi-annual scientific congress of the Korean Dental Association took place at the esteemed School of Dentistry in Seoul National University.
