Mastering Surgical Pathology: Eliminate Diagnostic Errors and Enhance Clinical Practice

The Arthur Purdy Stout Society of Surgical Pathologists (APSS) and the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) have once again joined forces to provide exceptional educational opportunities for practicing pathologists. The Fifth Edition of Modern Surgical Pathology Through the Expert Eyes of APSS-USCAP is a comprehensive course designed to address significant practice gaps in diagnostic surgical pathology.

Addressing Common Challenges in Surgical Pathology

The expert faculty has identified areas that continue to pose difficulties for pathologists, including:

• The evaluation of invasion in biopsies of the genitourinary tract, oropharynx, and lung
• The classification of inflammatory conditions of the upper gastrointestinal tract
• The distinction between fibrotic interstitial lung diseases
• The differentiation between reactive and neoplastic changes in the female genital tract
• The differential diagnoses of salivary gland tumors

This course aims to empower pathologists to eliminate diagnostic errors by highlighting common pitfalls and providing practical approaches to resolve them using routine microscopic examination and immunohistochemistry. The role of adjunctive molecular tests will also be discussed where appropriate.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, learners will be able to:

• Eliminate diagnostic errors by recognizing typical pitfalls and utilizing provided approaches to resolving these pitfalls in surgical pathology using both routine microscopic examination of H&E-stained sections and immunohistochemical stains
• Discuss the uses and limitations of immunohistochemistry in diagnostic surgical pathology
• Discuss the role of newer adjunctive molecular tests where appropriate
