Cancer Glycobiology: Unlocking the Secrets of Cancer Development and Metastasis

The NIH/NCI Alliance of Glycobiologists for Cancer Research is a consortium of 10 tumor glycobiology laboratories dedicated to investigating the impact of cancer-associated glycans (CAGs) on cancer development and metastasis. The alliance aims to identify CAGs as novel biomarkers for early-stage cancer detection or as targets for curative cancer therapy.

The Mission of the Alliance

The mission of the Alliance is to elucidate the structure and function of CAGs in cancer development, providing clinically useful biomarkers for detecting cancer early or predicting metastasis. This endeavor has sparked extensive collaborations across US and international institutions, accelerating the discovery of glycan-based biomarkers and driving progress towards diagnosing early-stage cancer and developing curative anti-cancer therapies.

Research Objectives

The primary goals of this research effort are:

1. To elucidate how cancer-associated glycans functionally impact cancer growth and metastasis
2. To identify cancer-associated glycans that can serve as biomarkers for cancer detection or progression
3. To develop cancer-associated glycans as novel therapeutic targets for cancer treatment and cure

This comprehensive volume comprises nine chapters, each contributed by a funded laboratory, reviewing new methods and mechanisms highlighting the roles of glycoconjugates as cancer biomarkers and/or anti-cancer therapeutic targets.
