Premature ejaculation, also known as Ejaculatio Praecox (EP), is a common sexual dysfunction in men, characterized by the loss of voluntary ejaculation control. This condition has significant negative effects on the psyche and sexual life of those affected, as well as their partnerships. Despite its prevalence, a causal therapy remains elusive due to the unclear etiology of the condition.
Recent findings suggest that the neurotransmitter Serotonin plays a crucial role in the pathophysiology of EP. This breakthrough has paved the way for the development of targeted therapeutic approaches.
Besides behavioral therapy, most pharmacological treatments are currently used “off label.” Positive effects have been documented for local anesthetics, chronic intake of selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), and Phosphodiesterase-5-Inhibitors. Recently, Dapoxetine, a new short-acting SSRI, has been approved as the first medication specifically for the treatment of Premature Ejaculation.
This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date information source on the pathophysiology, epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of premature ejaculation. It is an essential resource for urologists, general practitioners, internists, psychiatrists, and psychologists who encounter this condition in their daily practice.
